Indian Financial Sector: Thrust and Challenges

The Department of Financial Studies (DFS), University of Delhi, South Campus, in association with the Indian Accounting Association, Delhi Chapter, and sponsored by Taxmann, organized a national seminar on the thrust and challenges in the Indian Financial Sector on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at S.P Jain Auditorium, South Campus. Prof I.M. Pandey, Dean, Faculty of Business and Commerce and HOD, DFS, formally began the seminar with an enthusiasm for the future which was contagious. He talked about his ongoing efforts to make the course of Master of Finance & Control offered by DFS at par with the best in the world. The keynote address delivered by the Chief Guest, Mr. Rakesh Rewari, Deputy Managing Director, SIDBI came as a great learning experience as he explained the critical role of SIDBI in promoting micro, small and medium enterprises in the country. The new Vice Chancellor of Delhi University, Prof. Dinesh Singh then captivated the audience by a speech in which he emphasized how Mathematics and Economics are integral to the study of Finance. In addition he stressed on the great need of morality in finance. At the end of the inaugural session, the vote of thanks was delivered by Dr. Avinash Chander, Director, Technical ICAI, President, IAA, Delhi Chapter, Secretary, Accounting Standard Board of India.

The technical session had three speakers. Prof. Sanjay Sehgal of DFS moderated the session, highlighting the key points raised in every lecture. The session’s first speaker was Mr. Shashank Ojha, Senior E-governance Specialist & Head, India Programme, World Bank, New Delhi who spoke on the importance of financial inclusion, financial innovation and information communication technology (ICT). Dr. Ramesh Bhat, Executive Chairman, WOne Management System, Former Professor IIM, Ahmedabad, delivered an informative lecture on private equity investment in which he talked about both its positives and negatives. Mr. Naresh Pandey, CFO, Nokia Siemens then held the audience in thrall with his humorous takes on life as a CFO. Using Bollywood lingo and everyday instances he illustrated the challenges and responsibilities of today’s CFO. A short Q&A session was followed by the vote of thanks, delivered by Mr. Sanjeev Singhal of the Indian Accounting Association, thus ending the technical session.
Post lunch, Prof. Malashri Lal, Director, South Campus gave the Valedictory Address in which she reiterated that it was the continual initiative of South Campus to promote interdisciplinary learning and hoped that more such seminars would be held in the future. Dr. J. L. Gupta gave the vote of thanks on behalf of the Indian Accounting Association, Delhi Chapter.
