XXIII Annual Convention 2010 @ MFC : A huge success

XXIII Annual Convention 2010
organised on 18 September, 2010 by the students of Master of Finance Control(MFC,) offered by the Department of Financial Studies(DFS), University of Delhi

The Convention is the flagship event of DFS and is welcomed with great enthusiasm every year by lovers of finance as this annual event helps bring them under a common roof. This year the Imperial Hotel located at Janpath, New Delhi served as the roof for a gathering which included academicians, industry professionals(and not just from finance) and of course, students of finance .

Year 2010 has witnessed the world slowly shrug off the effects of the global recession and so it was only appropriate that the theme for this year’s convention was ‘Changing headwinds In Global Financial Landscape’.

Mr. U. Venkataraman, Executive Director, MCX Stock Exchange Ltd. (MCX-SX) was the Guest of Honour at the Convention. He inaugurated the Convention, and emphasized the importance of the theme in the present context. He also released ‘Finscoop’ the annual newsletter of DFS.

The keynote address by Mr. Gunit Chadha, CEO, Deutsche Bank India set the tone for the day through a stimulating discourse laced with wit and anecdotes. DFS then recognized the special contributions by Ms. Suparna Singh, Head, NDTV Convergence and Mr. Prabhu Chawla, Editor, India Today in the field of media and journalism by conferring them the Media and Journalism Awards. Several distinguished alumni were also felicitated on the occasion.

After a small tea break, the first technical session commenced with Mr. Sunil Garg, President- Treasury, Religare Enterprises discussing capital markets in the global economy. Mr. Nipun Sahni, MD & Head, Global Commercial Real Estate, DSP Merrill Lynch, also an alumnus of the institute, then spoke on the past and present trends in the real estate sector. Mr. Pallav Sinha, President & Chief Executive, Fullerton elucidated the opportunities for financial services in emerging markets. Mr. Sandeep Chaufla, Tax Partner, Ernst & Young decoded the Direct Tax Code for us, commenting on its need, its features and consequences of its implementation. Mr. Sanjay Sinha, CEO, L&T Mutual Fund rounded up the morning session by giving the listeners portfolio management strategies to beat inflation.

A sumptuous lunch was followed by presentations given by MCX-SX and DFS’ social partner SOS Children’s Village. The post lunch session had Mr. Sumit Gupta, President, Commercial Banking, Yes Bank Ltd. explaining the impact of Basel II norms on banking. Mr. DVSSV Prasad, MD, PNB Gilts then enlightened the listeners by speaking about the Indian banking experience in the global arena. The investment opportunities thrown up by changing global headwinds were discussed by Mr. Satrajit Bhattacharya, Deputy General Manager, HDFC Ltd. There could not have found a better speaker than Mr. Pradeep Kumar, CEO, IIFCL for expounding the trillion dollar opportunity that exists in the Indian infrastructure sector.

The wide variety of topics covered coupled with the experience and skill of the speakers meant that it was a day of immense learning for everyone present. The 150+ delegates who attended the Convention must surely be carrying fond memories of this day with them; some of them may already be waiting eagerly for the next edition, Convention 2011.
